I'm told by Bira, who supplied this very fine exhibit, that Nacional are one of Sao Paulo's traditional clubs. The club was originally known as Sao Paulo Railway and had close links to British workers involved in constructing Sao Paulo's railway system after World War I. This seems to be a relatively common origin for Paulista clubs (see also Noroeste on the site). Structurally the shirt is something of a throwback to the 1980s which is understandable given the club's relatively lowly status. I don't know too much about Koontz, the manufacturer but I assume they are an obscure local manufacturer in Sao Paulo. Nacional, like a few other clubs in Brazil, appear to play their home games at two different stadiums, a practice which seems very strange to European fans.
