Maybe you're wondering why every second club from South America has a diagonal stripe on their shirts? Well settle down children and I'll tell you. The story goes that an Argentinian club (River Plate I think) were tired of everyone playing in the same white kit and a student who played for the club stitched a sash onto their shirts to differentiate them from all the other teams. Legend has it that the other clubs were so taken with this design that they all started doing a similar things to their shirts thus negating the poor students needlework. I don't know if it's true or not but I like to think it is. This excellent Ponte Preta shirt came to me courtesy of Brazilian collector, Bira.
