It took a while for Russia to find it's true footballing identity after the break up of the old USSR. For along time the team eschewed red shirts, possibly trying to establish a Russian character and distance themselves from their Soviet past. To this end blue was used as an away colour for a good fifteen years or so. This is a Nike player issue away shirt from 1998 and saw the use of the typically Russian two headed eagle on the badge. It's a heavyweight shirt and would be ideal for a game on a cold night in Moscow. Or St Petersburg. Or Vladivostok.
